Chief Secretary reviews urban mission projects

KOCHI: The dispute over the fixing of bus routes for the low-floor buses in Kochi will be sorted out at the government level.

Local Administration Minister Paloli Muhammad Kutty and Transport Minister Jose Thettayil will attend a discussion in this regard in Kochi on September 29. The meeting will be held at the Corporation Council Hall at 2 p.m. The Kochi Corporation had objected to the Kerala State Transport Corporation “unilaterally” suggesting the bus routes.

The Corporation authorities were of the stand that only a special purpose vehicle formed for the management of the fleet had the right to take such a decision.

The civic representatives also raised the issue of impropriety in the managing director of the transport corporation writing directly to the Kochi Mayor regarding the routes.

The Corporation has been directed to complete the formalities related to various Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission projects like tendering of works without waiting for land acquisition, said Neela Gangadharan, Chief Secretary.

Ms. Gangadharan was in Kochi for reviewing the mission projects of Kochi.

At the same time, steps for expediting the release of funds for land acquisition will also be taken. The storm water and drainage projects of the city were progressing as per the schedule, she said.

The Kochi Corporation has sought financial support for land acquisition for various projects supported by the mission.

Kochi is looking for a support of Rs. 300 crore for various projects. It had sought Rs. 18 crore for land acquisition related to the water supply and sewerage projects, Mayor Mercy Williams said.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Mayor C.K. Manisankar; District Collector M. Beena; Project Director of the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project, Sharmila Mary Joseph; and standing committee chairpersons of the Kochi Corporation.
