State Government revises pay scales of college teachers and doctors

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The State Government, in accordance with the recommendations of a high-level committee, has revised the pay scales of college teachers who are paid salaries according to the UGC guidelines.

The State Cabinet, which met here on Friday, also revised the pay scales of government doctors.

Doctors serving in rural areas, in-service doctors who have obtained postgraduate degrees and freshers are eligible for a higher pay varying between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 10,000. The Cabinet also approved a proposal to regularise the services of 590 doctors appointed on contract.

Session

Briefing presspersons after the meeting, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and Minister for Home V.S. Acharya said that a 15-day session of the legislature would be held in November.

It was also stated that the State Government was keen on a discussion on any given subject which was in the interests of the State’s development.

With reference to the increase in the salaries of college teachers, including those employed in private colleges aided by the Government, Dr. Acharya said the revised pay scales would be effective from January 1, 2006.

He said 11,500 teachers in 600 colleges across the State would benefit. This would incur an expenditure of Rs. 954 crore.

On December 31, 2008, a high-level committee recommended to the Government that the salaries of teachers should be revised.

The revision should be effective from January 1, 2006 and valid until March 31, 2010. As per the UGC guidelines, the pay scales of teachers have to be revised once in five years.

The Union Government will bear 80 per cent of the cost of pay revision.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said the session in November would be held in Bangalore and not in Belgaum as had been planned.

Work

“Work on the legislature building in Belgaum has begun and we hope that at least the hall will be ready next year after which one session will be held there,” he added.
