Bangalore: Schools and colleges are today looking beyond textbooks. Educational tours are being encouraged by most institutions these days. Chrysalis Holidays, a vacation planning company, organises Space Camp at the NASA facility for students interested in mathematics and science. According to Supriya Kandhari of Chrysalis Holidays, the 10-day activity packed tour has seen enthusiastic response from schools in the city. The programme is designed for children aged between nine and 18. The children attend a series of educational programmes which motivate them to study mathematics and sciences, at the U.S. Space and Rocket Centre. They learn about space travel in an environment that promotes fun and excitement. Activities include theory and practical sessions on basic principles of propulsion, building and launching their own rockets and applying laws of motion in astronaut simulator training programmes. They also learn about machine control, microgravity and extra vehicular activity all in real time. Some tours are customised to the children’s needs. “We also have a history tour where children are taken to Washington D.C., which is the seat of the U.S. Government, and Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Some children opt for a tour to the Disney World in Orlando.” The schools that have participated in the tour include Delhi Public School, Athena Public School and KLE (Rajajinagar). The tour costs up to Rs. 2.1 lakh a student.
