CHENNAI: A hostel for girl students of the Dr. Ambedkar Law University was inaugurated at the university campus here Friday.

Speaking after the inauguration, Durai Murugan, Law Minister, said 15 acres of land has been allotted to the Law University at Perungudi where a new campus would come up within the next two years.

Originally, the existing University building was refurbished to house Chief Minister’s office outside the Secretariat.

However, Chief Minister Karunanidhi, instead of occupying it, ordered the Minister to allocate it to the University, named after Dr. Ambedkar.

Students expect more facilities from a college such as hygienic bathrooms, large dining halls, good food besides spacious hostel rooms. In order to provide all the required facilities, the land at Perungudi was identified and allocated to the university, Mr Durai Murugan said.

On the occasion, the Minister distributed admission letters to the students, who ranked first, second and third places for undergraduate law courses.

S. Sachidhanandam, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ambedkar Law University, said tat the hostel was constructed at the cost of Rs 75 lakh.

Of the total cost, the State government provided Rs 50 lakh. The new facility has 18 rooms and 70 students could be accommodated at the place, he said.

The university had tied up with British Academy, UK through which nearly £30,000 would be allocated for the programme. Under this programme students and lecturers could visit UK to learn more about the legal system. The amount would be spent over a period of four years, he added.
