Marad case: 10 more convicted

KOZHIKODE: The Special Additional District Sessions Court (Marad cases) here on Friday convicted 10 persons involved in the case of setting a house ablaze during the communal clashes at the seaside village of Marad in January 2002. K.P. Prasannakumari, Special Judge, will pronounce the verdict in the case on Saturday. The case relates to setting the house of Arayachendakathu Rajani on fire on January 3.

The court found Erjuvindakathu Sainudeen, Erjuvindakathu Sali, Kinnattingalathu Rafi, Erjuvindakathu Rafi, Kinnattingalathu Nizar, Seemamudakathu Anu, Erjuvindakathu Latheef, Nainanvalappu Yonus, Kinnathingalathu Haskar and Thalakkalakathu Kunhumon guilty under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). One of the accused, Seemamudakathu Gafoor has been acquitted of all charges. This is the eighth of the 67 cases registered in connection with the incidents, including the five killings on the Marad beach on January 3 and 4. According to the prosecution, the accused had assembled and attacked the house of Rajani and set it on fire. The Beypore police had registered the case.

The accused have been charged with 436 (mischief by fire or explosives with intent to destroy house); Section 153-A (promoting enmity between groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence and language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 450 (house-trespass in order to commit offence punishable with death), 143 (unlawful assembly) and 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapons) of the IPC.
