Bangalore: With the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimating that nearly 20 million people will die of cardiovascular diseases by 2015, it is feared that heart disease is going to become the number one cause of death globally. But the most heartening fact is that 80 per cent of these deaths can be avoided through a healthy diet and lifestyle. With millions of productive life-years being lost annually posing significant threat to the vitality of our interdependent global system, the theme for this year’s World Heart Day — Work with Heart — has been appropriately set, say doctors. “This World Heart Day is calling on everyone to ‘Work with Heart’ — encouraging people to make small changes that together could make a big difference in favour of greater health and productivity,” R.S. Venkatesulu, managing director and consultant cardiologist at Sarvodaya Hospital said. Recommending healthy choices in the workplace, Dr. Venkatesulu said: “A diet low in saturated fat and rich in fruits and vegetables combined with regular physical activity can lower the risk of heart disease.” To mark the World Heart Day on September 27, the hospital has come up with a “Heart Insure Programme” (HIP) where a post-angioplasty patient will be enrolled for a three-year health monitoring strategy.
