‘Provide accommodation to teachers in border areas’

Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: Kannada Development Authority president Mukhyamantri Chandru on Saturday urged the State Government to provide residential accommodation to schoolteachers in border areas of the State.

Addressing presspersons after reviewing the department-wide progress in the implementation of Kannada in administration and other areas in the district here, he said non-resident teachers were facing hardship for want of accommodation in villages where they had been posted. If the Government provided houses to these teachers, it would go a long way in improving the attendance of teachers in schools and enable them to spend more time with students. Mr. Chandru claimed that he had been able to achieve 60 per cent success in the implementation of Kannada in administration during his tenure. However, cooperation from government employees and people would be of a great help to achieve the objective of making Kannada administrative language in the State.

He took objection to issuing advertisements in English to Kannada newspapers. At a time when English newspapers published from the State were printing advertisements in Kannada, it was ironical to see English advertisements in Kannada papers. He noted a few instances in departments such as Police, where certain forms were still in English.
