Meet on safe drinking water

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Safe water is a critical environmental and public health issue, as well as a means to lift people out of poverty and ensure human security, President of GITAM M.V.V.S. Murthi, said during a seminar on safe drinking water and its management, organised by GITAM Institute of Science on Friday.

Water sources and supply were depleting due to global warming and population pressure leading to conflict over scarce resources, Dr. Murthi said and observed that expanding access to clean water and sanitation would have ripple effects throughout local economies and societies.

A professor of National University of Singapore’s Institute of Water Policy V.V. Bhanoji Rao said that water was centre for development but in India drinking water never entered the mainstream. Providing safe water was important for human health and development. All over the world, Governments were aware of this fact and in India the leaders should take concrete action to solve this crisis in the next decade, Prof. Bhanoji Rao said.

GITAM University V-C M. Gangadhara Rao warned against contamination of drinking water, which would make people sick, particularly children. Prof. T. Shivaji Rao presided. Andhra University civil engineering professor S. Rama Krishna Rao, professor of environmental sciences K. Uday Bhaskar Reddy, APPCB Environmental Engineer K. Sreerama Murthy, Prof. P.V.V. Prasada Rao, HoD of Environmental Sciences N. Srinivas spoke on different topics.
