HYDERABAD: Fearing adverse reaction from the high command over disruption of the membership drive, K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao, former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s aide, appealed to the party cadres to abide by the party’s decision and actively participate in the membership drive. In a statement here on Saturday, Dr. Rao asked party workers not to cross the line that would adversely affect the image of the party. The pro-Jagan camp apparently got worried over the flak from the high command when the membership campaign was disturbed for three consecutive days in nearly a dozen districts. AICC general secretary M. Veerappa Moily even directed APCC chief D. Srinivas to crack down on the errant leaders. Dr. Rao, who is in the forefront of ‘make Jagan Chief Minister’ campaign, issued the appeal to prevent further setback to their efforts. “Every Congressman, from the grassroots level to those holding top positions, should respect the orders of the high command in true letter and spirit,” he said. Expressing anguish over the overzealousness of the cadres, Dr. Rao said, “Even at this hour of grief, we should be patient enough to meet the requirements of the day. Our action should strengthen the party high command.” He said all Congress workers must ensure that their actions were not seen as defying the party leadership. Dr. Rao said it was not fair to lock the district party offices, stall the teleconferences and stop the membership drive till Mr. Jagan was made the Chief Minister. Referring to the late Reddy, he said: “Our beloved leader remained a symbol of discipline and secured a permanent place not only in the hearts of the people of Andhra Pradesh, but also in the party leadership.” He said the high command had understood the anxiety of cadres to see Mr. Jagan as the Chief Minister. “Let us all work as disciplined soldiers,” he remarked.
