World Tamil meet postponed

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The State government on Tuesday announced that the Ninth World Tamil Conference, slated to be held at Coimbatore in January 2010, would be held in June-end or early July to enable participation of more Tamil scholars from different parts of the world.

A meeting chaired by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at the Central Institute of Classical Tamil here to review the progress of the work relating to the conference took note of the views of several scholars who sought more time to prepare research papers and plan their travel, according to an official release. The government had earlier stated that the Tamil conference would be held in Coimbatore between January 21 to 24, 2010. About a week ago, the government said it would approach International Association of Tamil Research (IATR) and get its approval for the conference.
