Seed village programme introduced in Namakkal
Staff Reporter
NAMAKKAL: The agriculture department has introduced the seed village programme for paddy, millets, pulses and oil seeds in Namakkal district.
Joint Director of Agriculture S. Durai said that the Central and State governments had launched the programme to ensure supply of quality and certified seeds to farmers.
A village in which a crop is predominantly grown will be selected under the programme.
Farmers in the village will be encouraged to raise the crop based on the seed farm standards.
The department will extend subsidy and other necessary assistance to the farmers. Officials from the department will conduct checks periodically, Deputy Director of Agriculture A. Prabakaran said. The department has selected Pallipalayam, Elanthakuttai and Kumarapalayam villages in the first phase to produce paddy seeds.
Training on various technologies such as selection of certified seed and seed treatment was imparted to the selected farmers.
Assistant Director of Agriculture, Pallipalayam, B. Muralidharan conducted the training programmes.
Mr. Durai said that the programme would help the department to ensure the supply of quality seeds to all the farmers in the district.
It would also help improve agricultural productivity in the district. Farmers could obtain more information about the seed village programme at the office of the Joint Director of Agriculture.
