No takers for M.Sc. Sugar Technology

Staff Correspondent

Bidar: In the past three academic years, there have been no takers for the Master of Science in Sugar Technology offered by Gulbarga University at its Postgraduate Centre in Bidar. Experts attribute the lack of interest in students to take up the course to non-availability of jobs for those who complete this course.

The university Registrar, Pratap Singh Tiwari, told The Hindu, on Monday that the course was aimed at producing skilled manpower needed for sugar factories. “There are 15 seats available. We need a minimum of 10 students to run the course. But, in the past three academic years, students have not shown any interest.

“The faculty appointed to teach students of M.Sc. in Sugar Technology are now engaged in teaching chemistry to students of other courses. Lack of enough employment opportunities after completion of the course may be deterring students from opting for the course,” Mr. Tiwari added.

Ishwar Khandre, Bhalki MLA, Chairman of the Bidar Sahakara Sakkare Karkhane said: “The sugar factories have been modernised in recent years and require skilled manpower supplied by engineering colleges.” He added it was difficult to provide jobs to all those who complete the course every year.
