Staff Reporter
Tirupur: Production in the Anuparpalayam steel utensils manufacturing cluster here came to a grinding halt on Tuesday as the entire 1,700 –odd workforce struck work for a day demanding higher festival bonus this year vis-À-vis last Deepavali. The employees affiliated to Centre of Indian Trade Unions, All India Trade Union Congress, Labour Progressive Front, Anna Thozhil Peravai, Hind Mazdoor Sabha, Indian National Trade Union Congress, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sabha and Kamatchi Amman Patra Thozhilalar Sangham, had demanded 20 per cent of their annual salary as bonus.
K. Rengaraj, secretary, CITU, told The Hindu that workers got only 13 per cent to 16 per cent of their annual salaries as bonus last year, which would not be sufficient this time.
Resolution
The employees later submitted a resolution signed by them highlighting their demands to the manufacturers.
Industry sources said that production loss at the cluster was computed at Rs. 15 lakh owing to the strike.
