Candidates at a job fair for family members of police personnel fill in application forms in Chennai on Monday. CHENNAI: It was a job fair with a difference. On the employers side were leading Information Technology firms such as the TCS, HCL and Sutherland among others, while the job seekers were exclusively family members of serving or retired police personnel. As a welfare measure, Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran thought of the job fair, held here on Monday, involving top companies. Of the 734 candidates who appeared with their certificates, 241 were shortlisted. About 16 candidates were given appointment orders on the spot, police sources said. “A total of 27 companies participated in the fair. At least 45 per cent of the candidates were engineering graduates. Though the fair was meant for police personnel serving in the Chennai Police, we allowed others from the suburban and neighbouring districts to take part,” Mr. Rajendran said. Pointing out that many policemen were so busy with their routine duties that they had little time to guide their children, he said welfare of the force was also an integral part of the department. “A couple of retired police officials approached me seeking assistance in getting their children employed. We are also planning to have a separate job fair for the spouses of 3,000 plus police constables in Chennai.” Mr. Rajendran said though the employers made no compromises in their recruitment standards some relief was given when it came to communication skills. “The focus was more on the level of technical knowledge. At a time when many companies are either shedding jobs or putting recruitment on hold, the fair would go a long way in helping the family of policemen.” Additional Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) M. Ravi was also present.
