Karunanidhi unveils Periyar statue

tribute: The Periyar statue that was unveiled by the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, in Tiruvarur on Wednesday.

TIRUVARUR: The starting of the Central University at Tiruvarur is in a way fulfilment of Periyar’s aim to provide higher education to the rural students, the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, said here on Wednesday.

Unveiling a life-size bronze statue of Periyar at Tiruvarur Bus Stand, the Chief Minister said he had performed the task many a time at various places in the State, but taking part in such a function in Tiruvarur was of special significance.

“The image of Periyar is etched in my memory. Of all the praises heaped on me, my desire is to be known as a man of self-respect,” said Mr. Karunanidhi.

K. Veeramani, General Secretary of Dravida Kazhagam said in seeking 50 percent reservation of seats in Central institutions for the respective home States, the Chief Minister has safeguarded the rights of Tamil Nadu. Mr. Veeramani called for naming the new Central University after Mr. Karunanidhi.

Earlier, the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi visited his mother’s Samadhi at Kattur village near Tiruvarur and paid respects.

M.K. Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister, S.S. Palanimanickam, Union Minister of State for Finance, U. Mathivanan, Durai Murugan, Ko. Si. Mani, Arcot Veerasamy, and M.R.K. Paneerselvam, State Ministers and N. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor, Periyar Maniammai University, took part.
