Thrissur: The Kidney Federation of India, a charitable foundation working for patients with renal failure, was officially inaugurated on Wednesday with its chairman, Fr. Davis Chiramel, donating one of his kidneys to a patient.

It was a second birth for Gopinath, a Vadanappaly-based electrician, who received Fr. Chiramel’s kidney in a complicated surgery performed at Lakeshore Hospital, Ernakulam.

The Kidney Federation of India raised Rs. 5 lakh for his surgery too.

Vicar of St. Francis Xavier Church, Vadanappaly, Fr. Chiramel is also founder of other charity institutions such as ACTS and Janananma.

John Cyriac, vice-chairman of the federation, told reporters here on Wednesday that the primary objective of the federation was to encourage people, especially the relatives of the patients, to donate kidneys.

“Thousands of renal patients, including children and youth, need kidneys. The high expense of dialysis has pushed many families to death traps. The voluntary kidney donation will check the mushrooming kidney rackets,” he pointed out.

The Federation urged the government to provide free dialysis for all renal patients.

“The patient will need medicines worth thousands a month even after surgery. They are susceptible to many diseases as the natural immunity gets suppressed with medicines to protect the received kidney,” Mr. Cyriac noted. The federation has plans to create a Kidney data bank, by collecting consensus letter from relatives of persons who were willing to donate their kidneys. An awareness campaign of the federation will be launched by playback singer K.J. Yesudas. Cine star Suresh Gopi, lyricist Kaithapram Damodharan Namboodhiri, film director Jayaraj and many other persons from socio-cultural sectors would participate in the campaign, the federation sources said.
