Bhubaneswar: Paddy production in Orissa this year will be less than that of last year but its food requirement will be ‘easily met’, according to State Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout. “Orissa farmers will produce less food grain this time in comparison to last year’s production, which was about 9.30 lakh of additional paddy,” he said. Nuapada heads listA total 12 out of the 30 districts reported deficient rainfall with Nuapada heading the list with 50 per cent crop loss due to deficient rain and insect attack. Nuapada district reported 50 per cent deficient rainfall and its crop yield was hit in 7,000 hectares, official sources said. Against the State’s average rainfall of 1136.6 mm per annum this time the amount was 1111.8 mm so far, which was 2.2 per cent less, the sources said. Average rainfallWhile the average rainfall in September was 224.2 mm for the State, it was only 144.1 mm this time. The districts where above 20 per cent deficient rainfall was recorded include Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj and Sundergarh. Some districts like Nuapada reported rainfall deficient more than 50 per cent, the sources said. -PTI
