KOZHIKODE: The Edathupaksha Ekopana Samithi will organise a campaign from October 26 to 30 to highlight the plight of those being displaced for the development of National Highway (NH) 17. Talking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Samithi president T.P. Chandrashekaran said its general secretary, M.R. Murali, would lead the campaign from Azhiyur on October 26. It would conclude at Edappally on October 30. Hundreds of people had been displaced from their homes or shops for the project, he said. Several people in the Vadakara-Azhiyoor-Vengalam stretch of NH 17 in the district had been affected. The compensation being provided by the government was not adequate for their rehabilitation. Mr. Chandrashekharan said the poor people in these areas were offered Rs.35,000 for a cent, which was not enough. On the all-party meet that District Collector P.B. Salim had convened, Mr. Chandrashekaran said it was a “farce.”
