Three held for illegal sand mining

TIRUNELVELI: Three persons were arrested here for illegal sand mining and seized the tractor and the lorry used for transporting the sand.

Police said I. Murugan (32) of Duraisamypuram under Achchanputhur police station limits was found illegally mining sand at Idavaipaththu tank on Tuesday and was arrested.

Besides seizing the tractor used for transporting the illegally quarried sand, the police also arrested the owner of the vehicle K. Gopal (56) of Idaikaal.

Based on the instructions from the Assistant Director (Mines) Mohanasundaram, Assistant Geologist A. James and his team were conducting surprise check at Pettai near here on Wednesday. As they saw a lorry carrying illegally quarried sand, they detained the vehicle along with driver Thangavel of Pettai.

After being produced before Tirunelveli tahsildar Antony Muthu, the sand-laden vehicle and the driver were handed over to Suththamalli police.
