KANNUR: Kannur-based Malabar Cancer Care Society (MCCS) will organise a 45-day exhibition on health, education and entertainment at the Police Maidan here from October 30. The exhibition is being organised in connection with the 20th anniversary of the MCCS, a voluntary organisation formed in 1989, for creating awareness of cancer control, society president D. Krishnanadha Pai and medical advisory board chairman M. Muhammed Ali said here. The society’s cancer control programme, launched by Mother Teresa here in 1994, was a major initiative that covered 20 lakh people in 73 panchayats and three municipalities in the district, they said. The Early Cancer Detection Centre launched here by the society was the first such centre in North Malabar. The MCCS had been conducting various projects sponsored by the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Population Fund, Mr. Pai and Dr. Ali said. The tele-medicine unit of the MCCS helped patients in the region get the services of doctors of the Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, for treatment and follow-up. The pain and palliative clinic under the society offered free service to scores of cancer patients in the region, they said. The mobile tele-medicine unit of the society, being started with the technical assistance of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), would be a great help to those in rural areas of the region, they said.
