Hand over land at the earliest, says VC

Staff Reporter

AMU wants road, water and power

Inspection is on: Aligarh Muslim University Vice-Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis and team visiting Chelemala, the proposed site for a special centre of the university at Perinthalmanna, on Wednesday.

MALAPPURAM: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will set up its special centre on the 392 acres proposed at Chelemala, near Perinthalmanna, in the district if the State government can construct a 100-ft wide road from the Pattambi- Perinthalmanna State highway and provide steady supply of water and power.

A high-level AMU team led by Vice-Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis visited Chelemala and examined the land proposed to be acquired by the State government for the university centre on Wednesday.

Prof. Azis said the land would be fit for the Aligarh campus if proper access and water and power supply were provided. The proposed land on top of a hill was at present hard to reach as there was no proper way to it.

“The land is okay, and it should be handed over to us as early as possible, preferably by December this year,” Prof. Azis said.

“The government has to provide road, water and power to Chelemala concurrently with the land acquisition.”

He said the university would appoint a consultancy to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) and a feasibility report (FR) only after the government handed over the land. The DPR and the FR were required for the sanctioning of funds by the Planning Commission.

“The handing over of the land and the preparation of the DPR and the FR should happen in the next six months… the earlier the better,” Prof. Azis said.

Describing his visit fruitful, Prof. Azis praised the government’s keenness in identifying the land and launching the acquisition proceedings on a war-footing.

The AMU asked the government for 250-300 acres. The government identified 392 acres at Chelemala spread in the villages of Anamangad, Pathayikara and Elamakulam. As much as 158 acres of land is plain and the remaining area on a slope.

Prof. Azis was accompanied by AMU Court members V.K. Beeran and P.A. Hamza; Parvez Musthajab, Controller of Examinations; Javed Akhthar, Dean of Faculty in Management Studies; Ekram Husain, former Dean of Faculty in Engineering; and N.A.K. Durrani, AMU media advisor and professor of mass communication.

V. Sasikumar, MLA; Collector M.C. Mohandas; Special Officer for Land Acquisition J. Lalithambika, and several other revenue officials also accompanied the AMU team.
