A Chennai advocate has challenged the grant of classical language status The status was granted to Kannada and Telugu on October 30, 2008
Mukhyamantri Chandru Bangalore: The Kannada Development Authority (KDA) has appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to take steps to have the two writ petitions filed in the Madras High Court challenging the Centre’s notification granting classical status for Kannada and Telugu, withdrawn. R. Gandhi, senior advocate of Chennai and former chairman of the Tamil Nadu Language Commission has filed the petitions. The Centre granted the classical status for both the languages on October 30, 2008. In a letter to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, KDA chairman Mukhyamantri Chandru said: “I earnestly request you to persuade R. Gandhi to withdraw the case.” “Installation of the two statues (of Thiruvalluvar in Bangalore and Sarvajna in Chennai) mark the dawn of a new era in cordial and harmonious relations between the people of two States,” the KDA chief said. As the petitions had been filed in the Madras High Court, the State had not been able to obtain facilities from the Centre for promotion of Kannada language. The Centre had to set up a standing finance committee for release of funds to the State. Mr. Chandru urged the Union Ministers from the State to put pressure on the Union Ministry for Human Resource Development and the Union Culture Ministry to set up the committee and clear all hurdles for establishment of Centre for Excellence and Language Promotion Board in the State.
