Safe and healthy: Participants attending the ‘Learn to Swim’ course in Tuticorin on Wednesday.

Tuticorin: “Learn to swim”, a 12-day course, commenced at the district stadium here on Monday.

The people in general should come forward and make use of this opportunity to increase their ability in swimming, P. Shaju, District Sports Officer said here on Wednesday.

“Swimming provides individuals an opportunity to get out and socialise regardless of their skill level. Learning how to swim will open up a variety of other aquatic activities as well and also will be of help at times of emergency. The benefits of swimming as a fitness routine are the same as those from a land based exercise programme. Swimming is undoubtedly the most worthwhile exercise and an excellent fitness activity as no other sport or activity allows the people to utilise muscles like swimming does. It is extremely good for health and it tends to be a major source of improvement in stamina and overall physique” Mr. Shaju added.

Those who are four feet tall will be eligible for participating in the programme. Classes will be conducted for one hour and have been classified in to four batches. The first batch starts from 6 a.m., the second and third batches will start at 7.15 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. The last batch will begin at 5.45 p.m. Those interested should pay a sum of Rs.500 as entrance fee. Course certificates will be issued after the completion of the 12-day programme.
