CHENNAI: The annual The Hindu Young World Quiz will begin in Hyderabad on October 6 and culminate in a grand finale at Coimbatore on November 6. The 2009 edition will be held in the 13 printing centres of the newspaper. Participation is open to students of Classes VII to IX. Teams must consist of any two bonafide students from the same school, and each institution can send in a maximum of four teams. In each regional centre, the teams will take a preliminary written test to decide the six finalists for that centre, where the finals will be held immediately. The winners in each centre will qualify for the all-India finals. The prize money for the national winner is Rs. 16,000, while the second prize carries Rs. 12,000 and the third Rs. 8,000. At the regional level, the winner takes home Rs. 8,000. The second prize carries Rs. 6,000 and the third position Rs. 4,000.
The Hindu will arrange for the travel and stay of outstation teams, including one adult escort per team, qualifying for the final. The regional rounds will be held in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Puducherry, Chennai, Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, Mangalore, Madurai, Tiruchi and Coimbatore, where the finals will also be held on the same day (see chart). The organisers reserve the right to amend the rules. For the 2009 edition, S&M Kids Wear is the title sponsor, while Kalasalingam University is the associate sponsor. The national sponsors are Black Thunder, Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Ltd., Gold Winner, Hatsun Agro Product Ltd., Vizag Steel Plant, Lotte Caramilk, Crocs shoes, Firefox Bikes, Britannica Encyclopaedia, Penguin Books, Cherry Blossom and Reynolds. Dabur Real Fruit Juice is the beverage sponsor and I Ads & Events is the event manager.
