Krishnagiri in pre-quarterfinals

NAGAPATTINAM: Krishnagiri and Nagapattinam advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the TNCA under-14 inter-district cricket tournament from the F zone here on Tuesday.

The scores: Nagapattinam 66 in 30.2 overs (C.S. Ashwin three for 12) lost to Krishnagiri 67 for one in 16.2 overs (Akash 44 n.o.).

Perambalur 182 in 31 overs (M. Ramkumar 87, Chitharasan 52, Venkatesh four for 24) bt Dharmapuri 81 in 17.4 overs (Selvaraj four for 11, Durairaj four for 16).

Easy win for Sri Krishna College

Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology (Coimbatore) blanked host Kongu Engineering College (Perundurai) 3-0 in the final of the Anna University Zone-7 tennis tournament at the Kongu EC courts in Coimbatore on Wednesday.

The results: Final: Sri Krishna CET (Coimbatore) bt Kongu EC (Perundurai) 3-0. Semifinals: Kongu EC bt Vellalar EC (Perundurai) 3-0; Sri Krishna bt Kumaraguru CT (Coimbatore) 3-0. Final standings: 1. Sri Krishna CET; 2. Kongu EC; 3. Kumaraguru CT; 4. Vellalar EC.

TN begins well

Defending champion Tamil Nadu opened its campaign in style in the girls’ section, defeating West Bengal 23-1, 29-1, in the National junior ball badminton championships at Velammal MHSS (Panchetti) here on Wednesday.

Other results: Boys: Assam bt M.P. 29-13, 29-9; TN bt Gujarat 23-0, 29-1. Girls: Punjab bt Rajasthan 29-3, 29-6.

Natl. racing championship

The sixth and final round of the JK Tyre National racing championship begins at the Irungattukotai Motor Race Track here on Saturday.

After qualifying and the first race in each category on Saturday, the championship will conclude with the final races on Sunday.

Speed NK Racing’s Ashwin Sundar, who won both races in round five, leads the Formula Rolon category with 52 points. Just two points behind Ashwin is Red Rooster’s Gaurav Dalal, who won the championship last year. In attempting to defend his title, Dalal will battle not just Ashwin, but also independent racer Saran Vikram, who is still in contention with 46 points and three races remaining. Competition isn’t as heated in the Formula Swift category, where TVS Girling’s Sudarshana Rao, on 70 points, starts the final round 14 points ahead of Wallace Sports’ Prithveen Rajan, needing just eight points from the final two races to clinch the title.

Sri Renuka Textiles posts win

Sri Renuka Textiles defeated Sachin Star CC by six wickets to win the Balu Alaganan Trophy at the Theni DCA Twenty20 cricket tournament on Tuesday.

The scores: Final: Sachin Star CC 114 in 20 overs (Vijay three for 18) lost to Sri Renuka Textiles 115 for four in 17.4 overs (Kishore 30).

Semifinals: Sachin Star CC 84 in 20 overs (Raja four for 25) bt Cosmo CC 76 in 16.5 overs; Sri Renuka Textiles 164 for five in 20 overs (Elango 74 n.o.) bt Theni CAS 76 in 20 overs (Vijay four for 28, Elango three for 18).

PSG Tech triumphs

PSG Tech edged out Bannari Amman Institute of Technology 2-1 to win the Dr. Sathikh Trophy at the State-level inter-engineering colleges’ football tournament, organised by MAM CET, in Tiruchi. CIT defeated Sona CT 2-1 to secure the third place.

Football trials

The Tiruchi District Football Association will conduct trials to select the junior team on October 5 and 6 at Jamal Mohammed College in Tiruchi. Those born on or after 1-1-1992 are eligible to participate.
