CRACKDOWN: Police personnel checking private buses for speed governors and air horns in the city on Wednesday.

KOCHI: Thirty-two private city buses were fined Rs, 1,000 each after they were found using air horns and multi-tonal horns violating Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The City traffic police under a team led by Circle Inspector Francis Shelby checked nearly 200 buses during the special drive conducted on Wednesday.

Employees of these buses have also been asked to produce the melody box, which is attached to the electrical horn to generate tonal variations, at the Traffic Police Station before 10 a.m. on Friday.

Buses found to repeat the offence after the first booking will be fined Rs. 2,000 and a recommendation for cancelling permits will also be forwarded to the Regional Transport Authority, said police officials.

Even though during the first day, the drive was focussed on private buses and tipper lorries, the drive against use of horns above allotted decibel level will be extended to other private vehicles too in days to come, sources said.

However, the drive that the traffic police started, along with Road Transport Office, to check use of speed governors in buses seems to have lost steam.

Nearly 100 buses were checked and 14 booked during the combined checking by traffic police personnel and Motor Vehicle Inspectors on Saturday.

Holidays and weekends have brought a lull in the drive.

The City Traffic Police are now awaiting the Motor Vehicle Inspectors to join them for renewing the drive.
