KOCHI: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has come up with several recommendations to ensure the quality of education being offered through its community colleges. According to the draft recommendations, the university will train the trainers and resource persons, who develop courseware at community colleges in each region. The aim is to ensure compliance with the standard requirements. All such colleges will be provided with the university’s standard norms to fix the required credits for achieving certificates and the norms must be strictly translated into the textbooks and training manuals. Each community college will be provided with standard sample textbooks and training manuals to develop their own courseware. Experts who had formulated the recommendations pointed out that the level of programmes will be uniform in all community colleges. A credit will consist of 15 hours of attendance for full-time face-to-face classes and 30 hours for part-time sessions. A candidate should earn 16 to 20 credits to get the certificate while 32 to 36 credits will be required for getting a diploma. For receiving the associate degree, the candidate should get 64 to 68 credits, the draft report said. There will be non-credit programmes for certification and these will be customised according to need of the State and the trade or individuals concerned. Students who want to enrol for the associate degree programme should be 12+2 pass-outs for direct entry. Those who could not complete or do their Plus Two course will have to come through Bachelors’ Preparatory Programme (BPP) of IGNOU or through a bridge course of an open university. No formal qualification is required for taking admission for a certificate in certain special vocations, where the applicant is already employed in a domain knowledge scenario.
