Money was the motive, says police officer The victim had suffered 35 stab wounds Bangalore: The Organised Crime Wing of the Central Crime Branch (CCB) has claimed to have cracked the murder of Hemalatha Mahadevappa (45), who was found with at least 35 stab wounds at her Anjaneyanagar residence on August 11, 2009, with the arrest of an engineering student here on Tuesday. The arrested person is Nuthan Kumar (21), a final year Computer Engineering student of BMS Engineering College in Basavanagudi, who owns Matrix Fitness in Girinagar. “Money is the motive,” Assistant Commissioner of Police S.Y. Hadimani told The Hindu. Nuthan opened his fitness centre in December 2007. His father, Suresh, an electrical contractor, sold his car to arrange the money for the centre. Ms. Hemalatha, who joined the centre, struck up a friendship with Nuthan, and he later invested Rs. 2 lakh in a chit fund with her as he wanted to present his father with a car. However, she refused to return the money to him and threatened him. On August 11, Nuthan asked for Rs. 5,000 but she did not give him the money. This provoked him into attacking her with a machete, Mr. Hadimani said. After committing the murder, the accused left the house with her mobile phone, which he threw behind R.V. College in Jayanagar. He also got rid of the murder weapon.
