It completes the cover-up: CPI(M)

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday said the decision of the Manmohan Singh government to withdraw the case against Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi completed the cover-up in the Rs. 64-crore Bofors pay-off case.

In a statement, the Polit Bureau said the move came in the wake of prolonged efforts to scuttle the case. “At every stage, successive governments headed by the Congress have resorted to various devices to derail the case and protect Quattrocchi. The Central Bureau of Investigation was prevented from pursuing the case seriously,” it said.

The CPI(M)’s reaction follows reports that the government informed the Supreme Court on Tuesday of its decision. The case against Mr. Quattrocchi is pending before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate here.

It will come up for hearing on Saturday and the CBI will file an application for its closure.
