Chennai: Madras Cricket Club, fielding Olympian Mohammad Riaz, State veterans Appiah and Shanmugam along with the evergreen goal-tender for two decades, Pannir Selvam, overwhelmed The Hindu HC 6-2 in the annual hockey fixture that precedes the Murugappa Gold Cup tournament on Wednesday. MCC led 5-0 at half-time. The dominance displayed by MCC was pronounced, and reflected in the three-in-a-row goals show by guest player Sudarshan. Sanjay Kulwadi had put the team ahead and Appiah netted the fifth in his inimitable style. Determined to do better in the second half, The Hindu commanded the exchanges and struck twice to reduce the leeway. Midfielder Brian and striker Balaji found the mark before Riaz completed the tally for MCC. T.G. Thyagarajan, President, Madras Cricket Club, was the chief guest, and the teams were presented to him by the Organising Secretary, Arun Murugappan.
