Protest against ‘all-round failure’ of BJP Government

Staff Correspondent

‘Perform or quit’ is the Congress advice to Government

REMEMBERING GANDHI THROUGH A PROTEST: Leaders and workers of the Congress Belgaum district and city units staging a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Belgaum on Friday.

Belgaum: The Belgaum district and city units of the Congress on Friday staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in protest against what they alleged as “all-round failure” of the BJP Government led by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa.

“Perform or quit” was the Congress’ one-line advice to the ruling party.

The protest was led by DCC (Rural) president Shrikant S. Bhimannavar and city unit president Babulal G. Bagwan.

Congress MLAs from the district, including Feroz Sait, Shyam Ghatage and Kakasaheb Patil, and former Minister Prakash B. Hukkeri, besides office-bearers of the various block committees and Youth Congress unit participated in the dharna.

Later, in identical memorandums submitted by the two units of the party, the Congress said the process of growth and progress had retarded under the BJP Government. The problems of farmers and the common man remained unaddressed and most of the promises made by the Government had not been fulfilled.

On the contrary, the ruling BJP was misusing official machinery to further its political interests, the Congress alleged. Mineral resources were being looted, the party said. Large sums of funds released under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission, National Rural Health Mission, Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme and Sarva Shikshan Abhiyan by the Union Government were not being properly utilised — only to deprive the poor of the benefits of these schemes.

The Government has failed to properly distribute ration cards and improve the public distribution system. These omissions depict the lack of concern of the Government for the progress of its people. Under the rule of the BJP, attacks on minorities and their institutions had increased creating a sense of insecurity. Therefore, the ruling BJP should perform if it wanted to govern the State in a constructive and purposeful manner.
