ELURU: A special police party under the supervision of Kovvuru DSP G. Janaki Sharmila on Saturday busted a five-member inter-district gang of dacoits and recovered panchaloha idols of immense archaeological value at Kovvuru.

The police, led by Kovvuru Circle Inspector V. Gopalakrishna, apprehended the gangsters while allegedly trying to dispose of the stolen idols in a jewellery shop.

Quoting Deputy Director, Archaeology Department in Kakinada, Superintendent of Police B. Balakrishna said the idols dated back to the 16th century.

The idols of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Vishnu and Venkateswara Swamy were among those recovered from the accused persons.

Ms. Sharmila said the rare idol of Sita was broken into pieces by the gangsters. The places from where the idols were stolen and the modus operandi still remained a mystery.

The SP said an editor of a local daily based at Tadepalligudem Rudraraju Srinivasa Raju was also arrested on the charge of giving shelter to the gangsters. He allegedly developed nexus with the dacoits during his stay in the Rajahmundry Central Jail in connection with an attempt to murder case.

An astrologer belonging to Eluru, a painter from Rajahmundry, a goldsmith from Kavali in Nellore district and a realtor from Rajahmundry formed part of the gang.

Three held

Meanwhile, another gang of three persons was busted at Tanuku along with the booty, which included panchaloha idols allegedly stolen from Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple at Malkipuram in East Godavari district.
