Unique act

This has reference to the report ‘Girl’s body given for research’ (The Hindu dated September 25). The news touches one’s heart chords. The donation of the girl Mridula’s body is marvellous in more than one way. The girl was aged only ten and passed away consequent to a congenital heart problem. Knowing of her possible death, the girl was munificent enough to tell her parents to donate her body for medical research.

The unique act of this girl and her parents is greatly laudable.

May the soul of Mirthula – the 10-year-old girl who donated her body to the medical fraternity and students – rest in peace.

In her case, the presence of heart on the right side could not have been the cause of death, as it is not uncommon.

There is an 80-year-old person, living happily in Coimbatore, with the heart on the right side. Incidentally, 15 years ago he too has expressed his willingness to donate his body after death to medical college. Many persons across the world live with the above condition without any problem.

Railway enquiries

The recent switchover of railway enquiries from the landline telephone to automated enquiry number 139 is not at all user-friendly.

The system does not inform running trains’ exact arrival and departure timings and the schedules of late trains are not updated on time.

As a result, passengers are forced to wait in railway stations for a long time. The average cost per call comes to about Rs. 5. I request the railway authorities to make the system toll free and provide every railway station with an emergency enquiry landline number.

Ration shops

The State Government’s move to improve the infrastructure of ration shops is welcome.

The salesman should be friendly and sympathetic to consumers especially to senior citizens.

Prior attention to the elderly people may not be objected to by others if they were asked to form a separate queue.

Petrol outlets

In the Nilgiris District there are six taluks namely Ooty, Coonoor, Gudalur, Pandalur, Kotagiri, and Kundha. All taluks have petrol outlets except at Kundha taluk.

Hence, petrol outlets should be set up at Majoor, Bengalmattam, Kaikatty and Edakkadu.

Authorities concerned may kindly look into this.

Post office modernisation

This has reference to the report ‘Major post offices to be modernised’ (September 21). As such, the decision to modernise the system, though belated, will go a long way in offsetting the yearly loss and also in competing with internet and courier services.

The department can spare a small space on its envelopes, inland letter and Money Order forms to print advertisements for business establishments to augment its income.

Bus service

One can see school children standing under scorching sun or rain at the bus stop, Nanjundapuram road, off Ramanathapuram.

Philanthropists should come forward to save the children. Moreover the bus schedule in this route is quite erratic.

It is high time the Transport Corporation rescheduled the timings and added a few buses, taking into consideration the new apartments, schools and small industries. A new route between Medical College, Singanallur moffusil bus stand and Podanur via Nanjundapuram road can be thought of.

Stray dogs menace

Despite the claim of the civic authorities that sterilisation has been undertaken to arrest the growth of stray dogs, prowling by these dogs on the streets of Saibaba Mission area continues.

Their movements are more pronounced during nights and they pose a threat to the early-morning walkers of the locality. The situation warrants concrete action by the authorities concerned.
