“Women SHGs given over Rs.5,000 crore as loans”

More schemes launched for empowerment of women: Stalin

NAMAKKAL: The State government is giving more thrust to the development of women self-help groups members, helping them gain economic independence and social empowerment, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said on Sunday.

Inaugurating a Samathuvapuram in Agaram village near here on Sunday, he said that a slew of development programmes were being implemented in the State, enabling SHG members to take up self-employment activities. The State has over 4 lakh SHGs. Of them, over 2.8 lakh groups were in rural areas. Over Rs.5,000 crore had been extended as loans to the SHGs, encouraging women to start micro and small enterprises.

Mr. Stalin said the DMK government had introduced a number of programmes for the empowerment of women, including implementation of 33 percent reservation in seats in local administration.

Pointing out the struggles of Periyar to build a classless society, Mr. Stalin said people from all sections of society should cooperate with the government in eradicating the caste system.

Earlier, Mr. Stalin inaugurated 49 new buildings constructed at a cost of Rs.8.76 crore and laid foundation stone for the construction of buildings at a cost of Rs.27.04 crore.

Welfare assistance

He also distributed welfare assistance to the tune of Rs.21.77 crore to 8,255 beneficiaries selected under various welfare schemes.

Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare S. Gandhiselvan, Collector U. Sagayam, and senior officials were present.
