BHUBANESWAR: Showcasing 14 young Indian classical dancers from India and abroad, the fourth annual Devdasi National Dance Festival will be underway in the Capital from October 14 to 16.

Festival coordinator Jagabandhu Jena informed that the festival is the only one of its kind in Orissa that features all the Indian classical dance styles. It provides a platform for the young and talented artistes from all over the globe. The festival also confers the Devdasi National Award for dance every year to one of the participating dancers to encourage young artistes to pursue dance with devotion and professionalism, he added.

“A young dancer from any of the Indian classical styles below the age of 40 is being honoured with the award. So far Shibani Patnaik from USA, Yamini Reddy from New Delhi and Parwati Dutta from Aurangabad have been the recipients of the award for Odissi, Kuchipudi and Kathak respectively,” he detailed. The honour would go to Sattriya dance of Assam this year, he said.

The artistes scheduled to perform in the three-day festival this year include Arupa Lahiry (Bharatanatyam, Chennai), S.Divyasena (Kuchipudi, Chennai), Rupa Rani Das Borah (Kathak, Guwahati), Vipina Ramachandran (Mohiniattam, Kerala), Baishali Basu Sarkar (Manipuri, Kolkata) and Meernanda Barthakur (Sattriya, Guwahati).
