Rain loss in Chitradurga put at Rs. 31.52 crore

Chitradurga: The district administration has put the loss owing to heavy rain in the district at Rs. 31.52 crore.

In a press release issued here on Sunday, Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswas said that the district received more than average rainfall in the past three months. In August, the district recorded 141.6 mm rainfall as against the average rainfall of 55.8 mm. In September, it recorded 199.4 mm rainfall as against the average rainfall of 84.5 mm. Till October 3, the district recorded 38.6 mm as against the average rainfall of 21.9 mm. The average rainfall between January and December was 486.6 mm, but the district received 705.6 mm rainfall till October 3. The district administration had released Rs. 1 lakh each to the kin of eight persons who died in rain-related incidents. Fifty heads of cattle died in rain and a compensation of Rs. 2.7 lakh had been given to farmers. In all, 2,909 houses had been damaged in the district. The loss had been estimated at Rs. 1.45 crore, the release said.

Standing crops on 1,909 hectares of land had been damaged in the district. The loss had been estimated at Rs. 1.94 crore. Maize grown on 1,024 hectares, groundnut on 378 hectares, sunflower on 312 hectares, cotton on 50 hectares and jawar on 45 hectares of land had been destroyed.

Horticultural crops worth Rs. 95 lakh grown on 2,447 hectares of land had been destroyed. Onion grown on 2,422 hectares of land had been destroyed. The loss of property had been estimated at Rs. 25 crore. This included roads, bridges and tank bunds.

Fifteen government buildings and 47 minor tanks and check-dams had been damaged, the release said. BESCOM had estimated the loss incurred by it at Rs. 1.87 crore. With Rs. 4.11 crore from last year’s calamity relief fund, the district administration for the present fiscal year had received Rs. 5 crore, which was being used for relief works, Mr. Biswas said.
