NIT-K to introduce course in domain engineering

KEEN INTEREST: Members of the Karnataka Electricity Board Engineer’s Association participating in the anuual general body meeting held at NIT-K, Surathkal, near Mangalore, on Sunday.

MANGALORE: The National Institute of Technology – Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal, and the Central Power Research Institute, Bangalore, will jointly offer a postgraduate diploma course in domain electrical engineering for the serving electrical engineers, Sandeep Sancheti, Director, NIT-K, said on Sunday.

Speaking at the inaugural function of the 43rd annual general body meeting of the Karnataka Electricity Board Engineers’ Association at Surathkal he said that the one-year diploma course would be launched during the current academic year.

The NIT-K would issue the certificates to those completing the regular course. The curriculum for the course would soon be finalised, he said.

Prof. Sancheti said that the course would provide the electrical engineers in service with an opportunity to update their knowledge as experts from the CPRI would be among the faculty members. J. Krishna Palemar, Minister for Environment, Ecology, Ports, and Inland Water Transport, who inaugurated the meeting, suggested the electrical engineers to develop a technology to generate and supply power at less cost, especially from alternate sources.

The Minister called upon the people to reduce using plastic bags. Mr. Palemar announced that his Ministry would contribute Rs. 1 crore for flood relief operations in north Karnataka.

The authorities of Escoms had offered to donate Rs. 3.50 crore for relief operations, he added.

S. Sumanth, Managing Director, Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd (Mescom), said that the employees of his company would reduce using the vehicles by 5 per cent this financial year.

It was aimed at reducing the quantity of carbon being emitted in to environment, he said.

Mr. Sumanth said that an employee of the company working at Koppa had planted 2,700 teak saplings two years ago and they were surviving still. He said that the Mescom was facing dearth of staff as it had only 4,500 employees against the sanctioned 8,000 posts.

Shivayogi Kalasada, director, administration and human resource development, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd, said that the Government would recruit engineers to all electricity supply companies in this financial year. After training, thsee recruits would be posted to various Escoms in the State from April next, he said.

President of the association L. Ravi presided over the function.
