Friends have become a little too greedy, says Mamata

Special Correspondent

Kolkata: “Our friends have become a little too greedy,” Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee told a rally in Siliguri in north Bengal on Sunday, referring to her party’s electoral partner, the Congress, accepting the support of the Left Front to assume power in the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) board.

Indirectly indicting the Congress, for “betraying the trust of the people” Ms. Banerjee said: “We have done nothing wrong. But our friends have, though that is their affair and in which I will not interfere.”

She said the Trinamool Congress was the only alternative to the Left Front in West Bengal. “Mamata Banerjee cannot be suppressed by tying up with the CPI(M),” she added, in an apparent attack on the Congress for having done so to grab control of the SMC board. The Trinamool Congress will sit in the Opposition in the SMC, she added. She sought the forgiveness of the people who had voted for the alliance and “for change” for “not being able to live up to our word.”
