Nod for new anti-naxal plan
New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Security on Thursday approved a new plan to counter naxalites, in the backdrop of the beheading of a Jharkhand police inspector by Maoists.
The meeting here, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here, cleared the plan, a day after Home Minister P. Chidambaram warned the Maoists to “abjure” violence or face action, top government sources said.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister A.K. Antony told journalists that the Ministry was still studying the IAF request for opening fire on Maoists in self-defence, if required.
He clarified that the IAF proposal had not yet been put up before the CCS. Earlier in the day, IAF chief P.V. Naik said the Air Force would deploy its Garud Special Forces Commandos to man guns mounted on helicopters operating in naxal-hit areas — PTI
