Keeping criminals away: The entrances to the newly-constructed apartments of Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board in Kannan Kadu in Salem have been closed to prevent entry of anti-social elements. — SALEM: About 240 flats in the apartments constructed for the poor in Kannan Kadu here about six months ago are yet to be allotted for occupation. The delay in handing over the flats has led to a serious problem. The movement of anti-social elements has increased. As a result, the board was forced to close the entrances to the apartments. The dwellings were constructed at a cost of Rs. 4.26 crore. The buildings had been put up for people living in slums in the city. As the board had not made adequate security arrangements including street lighting, the anti social elements had started taking advantage of the situation. “To prevent their entry into the apartments during night hours, the board had closed the entrances,” people in the area said. Delay“Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam declared open the buildings at a function held in March. The flats could have been handed over to the beneficiaries immediately after the opening. But the officials were delaying the hand over of flats for reasons best known to them,” people said. People urge the board to take steps to hand over the flats to the beneficiaries without any further delay.
