BANGALORE: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has expressed concern over the security threat posed by cyber crime in the wake of rapid expansion in the use of Information Technology (IT) by industry, commercial establishments and the Government. In his address on Thursday to the two-day Bangalore Cyber Security Summit 2009, which was read out by Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs S. Suresh Kumar, Mr. Yeddyurappa referred to the existence of an “organised underworld” in cyberspace that is targeting Netizens through new types of crime such as false emails, fake websites etc. “Internet and emails are today suffering from a crisis of trust caused by cyber crimes. IT industries, particularly the BPOs, which handle data of their customers are very much concerned about the cyber crimes which may affect data security”, Mr. Yeddyurappa said. The Chief Minister also said that terrorists regularly use email to plan and execute their nefarious plans. He favoured the creation of a National Cyber Security Force, which will focus on developing strategies and tools for fighting cyber terrorism. Referring to Bangalore’s pre-eminent position in the field of IT, Mr. Yeddyurappa said that it was no longer enough for Bangalore to be recognised as the IT capital of India. “We would like and endeavour to make Bangalore the Information Security capital of India”, he said. He said the State Government would be initiating several steps to ensure “Secure Internet Access” in homes, schools and cyber cafes.
