New step for faster, safer postal delivery

Staff Reporter

Two sets of numbers will be used in addition to pin code

KOCHI: The Department of Posts (DOP) is set to introduce a new methodology to ensure prompt and correct delivery of mail, Shobha Koshy, Chief Postmaster General, Kerala Circle, has said.

Addressing mediapersons at the head post office here on Friday, Ms. Koshy said that under the new system, two sets of numbers would be introduced in addition to the existing pin code. This, she said, would ease the work of the postal department in places like Kochi, which did not follow a planned development trajectory.

Postman and route

A number would be assigned to each postman on beat. Based on the route adopted by the postman on his beat, another three digit number would be assigned to each address along that route. This would make it easier for the department to sort and deliver mails. “Besides, if a regular postman is on leave we can effectively guide the substitute which we are not able to do now,” Ms. Koshy said.

Ms. Koshy said that Department of Posts had appointed IT major Accenture as consultant for computerisation of post offices and to find out technology solutions to facilitate technology induction up to the branch post office level.

Once a definite proposal was formulated it would be placed before the Union Planning Commission for approval. Ms. Koshy said that a plan outlay was already available for the computerisation of post offices.

She said that the department had been pushing e-services in the last one year. The department was also looking at giving an impetus to its speed net facility. “We are working on the system and in future people would be able to track the movement of mail till the delivery point,” Ms. Koshy said.

Parcel tracking

Parcel net, a system for monitoring the movement of international parcels, was also being pursued.

“We have tied up with the Universal Postal Union (UPO) and adopted even a self audit scheme of international standards as part of quality improvement,” Ms. Koshy said.
