RCB blown away by Duminy

K.C. Vijayakumar

Bangalore: J.P. Duminy’s unbeaten 99 helped Cape Cobras defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Airtel Champions League’s inaugural match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday.

Cobras won by five wickets, scoring 184 for five in 19.4 overs in reply to Royal Challengers’ 180 for four in 20 overs.

Duminy (99 n.o., 52b, 8x4, 5x6) produced a well-paced knock that helped Cobras tide over the early shock of losing Herschelle Gibbs for a blob to seamer Praveen Kumar. The bowler also dismissed skipper Andrew Puttick.

Duminy found allies in Henry Davids, Justin Ontong and Ryan Canning during his match-winning effort. Duminy upset seamer Vinay Kumar’s line by shuffling in the crease and making room on either side. He also twinkle-toed to left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe and later against Royal Challengers’ skipper Anil Kumble and hoisted huge sixes.

Duminy remained unbeaten on 99 while Rory Kleinveldt struck the winning run.

Breezy fifties

Royal Challengers’ innings found the spark through Robin Uthappa and Ross Taylor, as the duo cracked breezy fifties after Kumble opted to bat.

The tentative Kallis edged Charl Langeveldt even as Uthappa (51, 39b, 7x4, 2x6) hit streaky fours before settling down to clatter booming fours and then muscled Monde Zondeki over the ropes.

Uthappa’s partner Rahul Dravid (28) feather-touched a straight-drive off Kleinveldt and the local pair shared a 68-run second-wicket partnership.

However, Uthappa, Dravid and Virat Kohli fell in quick succession before Taylor (53 n.o., 24b, 4x4, 4x6) brought about a fiery revival.
