KOCHI: India Post will launch an insurance scheme for rubber farmers in the districts of Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram in association with the Agriculture Insurance Corporation (AIC), Shobha Koshy, Chief Postmaster-General, Kerala Circle, said here on Friday.
Addressing mediapersons in connection with the World Post Day, Ms. Koshy said those with 55 rubber trees or more could avail themselves of the benefit of the scheme. Insurance coverage would be available for both mature and immature trees. India Post had already tied up with the AIC in Karnataka for coffee, she said.
Ms. Koshy said 400 more post offices under the Kerala Circle would be computerised by the end of December. With this, over 1,000 of the 1,900-odd post offices in the State would be computerised. “All post offices with a postmaster and one staff will be computerised,” she said.
Plans were afoot to expand the sale of gold coins and foreign exchange transactions through post offices in the Kerala Circle.
The number of post offices engaged in the sale of gold coins had been increased from 18 to 34. “We are proposing to add over 100 post offices, in addition to the existing 14 ones, that offer foreign exchange transactions,” Ms. Koshy said.
The State had a dedicated clientele for such a service, she said.
To facilitate cargo movement, the department had deployed logistic vans between Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode with stops at Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, and Thrissur.
Ten head post offices within the Kerala Circle had been instructed to get ready by December with the logistics for the introduction of core banking solutions.
Ms. Koshy said all head post offices were expected to be covered by March 31 next year.
