Title win for Mishal

Principal Correspondent

KOCHI: Mishal Dilawar brought cheer to the host Regional Sports Centre when he staved off a strong challenge from Malappuram’s Gautham Kumar and won the cadet boys’ title in the eighth RSC all-Kerala table tennis tournament here on Friday evening.

But it was Alappuzha all the way in the other events on the opening day at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium as Tarun Sanker (mini cadet boys), Seraha Jacob (sub-junior girls), Gia Anna George (cadet girls) and Treesa Cherian (mini cadet girls) — all from the Alappuzha YMCA TT Academy — emerged champions.

Mishal, just 10 and from Thevakkal’s Vidyodaya School, played a patient waiting game against Gautham. He came up with a series of pushes against the Malappuram youngster and went for the smash whenever the ball rose a bit. “He made me work hard, we were pushing for a long time,” said Mishal.
