MKU invites President to inaugurate facility

MADURAI: Madurai Kamaraj University has invited President Pratibha Patil to inaugurate its Centre for Women’s Studies.

Vice-Chancellor R. Karpaga Kumaravel said here on Friday that he had written to the President requesting her to inaugurate the Centre, sanctioned by the University Grants Commission (UGC). “We are awaiting her consent and once the date is given, all steps would be taken for inauguration,” he said.

For the presentation of ‘Tamil Peravai Semmal Awards’ given to eminent scholars, the university has constituted a committee with the Vice-Chancellor as convenor. Other members on the panel include the Higher Education Secretary K. Ganesan, poet Vairamuthu and the Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, Thanjavur.

Another committee was also constituted for the selection of recipient for Indian Science Congress Award. While the MKU Vice-Chancellor is the chairman of this committee, the other members are H.A. Ranganath, Director, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and J.A. K.Tareen, Vice-Chancellor, Pondicherry Central University.

The university was waiting for a Government Order from the State Government to go ahead with recruitment of lecturers to fill vacancies in various departments.

As many as 103 lecturer posts were lying vacant in regular departments, and 21 teaching post vacancies in the Directorate of Distance Education. Steps would also be taken to fill non-teaching vacancies, he said.

Online Tracking

He also announced the introduction of ‘Online Tracking of Thesis’ in the varsity’s research section to enable candidates who submitted their M.Phil. or Ph.D. thesis to ascertain its status.

“Once the system is ready, students can enter their registration number and know the status of the thesis.”
