Palliative care rally, exhibition today

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI: The Shanthallaya and Trichy Palliative Association will observe World Hospice and Palliative Care Day on Saturday by conducting competitions, taking out an awareness rally and a palliative care exhibition in the city.

It is a global day of action to enable people all over the world to stage events to raise awareness and vital funds for hospice and palliative care (also known as end-of-life care) services in their communities. The theme for this year is ‘voices for hospices.’ One aspect of the theme is about giving people affected by life-limiting illness of all ages a voice to help them overcome the isolation that illness can cause, and to be seen as people rather than patients.

Palliative care is given to individuals who are terminally ill with an expected survival of six months or less. The Shanthallaya Hospice in the city, a home for palliative care, is meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the dying individuals, while fostering the highest quality of life possible, K. Govindaraj, Founder and Managing Trustee, Shanthallaya Hospice, told presspersons here on Friday.

The hospice focus is not on treatment, but on pain and symptom management, comfort measures, acknowledging that the individual will die, supporting the family, and trying to provide the best quality of life for the remaining days, Dr. Govindaraj said.
