HYDERABAD: GHMC’s ‘Aasara’ programme started with the objective of helping senior citizens has come a long way since its inception two years ago, enriching the lives of several old people, said Commissioner S.P. Singh on Friday.

Assuring all support to the programme, he pointed out that training of volunteers for bedside assistance in association with MNJ Institute of Oncology and Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India – (ARDSI), has been successfully completed with placements to trainers.

In the first phase, 32 candidates were trained and more would be in the coming days, he said and urged senior citizens to call on the helpline 1253 for any assistance. There are about 40,000 members and 151 senior citizens clubs in the programme.

Earlier, the Commissioner honoured senior citizens in the age group of 95 to 100 years.

Aasara Committee members also resolved to support flood victims and adopt a village in Mahabubnagar district.
