Flood loss put at 1,001 cr.

GUNTUR: The loss in Gutnur district due to the recent Krishna floods was estimated at Rs.1,001 crore with agriculture crop loss alone put at Rs.567 crores, district In charge Minister Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose told reporters here on Friday.

The Minister, along with Union Minister of State for Textiles Panabaka Lakshmi, met Chief Minister K. Roshaiah at Gannavaram airport and submitted a memorandum seeking an immediate amount of Rs.157 crores for taking up urgent relief and rehabilitation works. A delegation of Ministers and district Collector B. Ramanjaneyulu said that works on cleaning Repalle town was in full swing.

Strengthening of the bund would be taken up immediately and height raised after discussing it with irrigation experts as this season the flow was highest ever.

CPI distributes fodder

Meanwhile, CPI State unit distributed two lorry loads of fodder for cattle in Lanka villages in Kolluru mandal on Friday. Party State secretary K. Narayana led the team in handing over 5 kg of rice to each of the affected families in Pesaralanka and Kishkindapalem.

MP’s plea

He advised Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah and TRS founder K. Chandrasekhara Rao not to politicise the flood relief operations and also not to incite people to take to extreme steps by igniting regional feelings with regard to water distribution.

Guntur MP R. Sambasiva Rao submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking declaration of recent floods as national calamity so that additional benefits accrue to the 1.60 lakh people.
