VIP visit: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh greeting the Ministers after an aerial survey of flood-affected areas, in Hyderabad on Friday. HYDERABAD: Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh complimented the State government for the way it tackled the unprecedented floods. At a press conference after a review of the situation here at Raj Bhavan on Friday, Dr. Singh said he was satisfied with the steps taken by the State in providing relief and rehabilitation. “It is gratifying that the government here had acted with speed, authority and sense of purpose.” Chief Minister K. Rosaiah thanked the Prime Minister profusely for visiting the State to see the flood-hit areas, announcing assistance and for the assurance to extend all help. He said Dr. Singh expressed deep concern during his aerial survey when he saw the havoc wreaked by the floods. Earlier, in his presentation, he said the magnitude of the floods was unheard of. The preliminary loss to the public and private property was about Rs.12,666.74 crore. The task of relief, rehabilitation and restoration was too gigantic warranting liberal assistance from the Centre. He sought financial assistance of Rs.6,000 crore as an advance under NCCF and Rs.3,052 under Central Road Fund, NREGA and other heads. 63 lives lostThe Commissioner, Disaster Management said the floods claimed 63 lives, affected 17.07 lakh population in 565 villages in 87 mandals in five districts besides inundating Kurnool, Nandyal towns. Senior Congress MLA, M. Sashidhar Reddy and member of the National Disaster Management Authority, who accompanied the Prime Minister all through, said Dr. Singh showed lot of interest in the Authority’s activities and complimented it for rushing teams to the flood- affected areas.
